Jeffrey has had alot to deal with in the last few months,
moving from Holland to England with a whole new way of life, you would think there is not much difference between England
and Holland but its huge, especially for a 9 yr old. Oops 10 yr old now!!
At the begining of the year (2004) he started getting up
every night to go to the loo (bathroom. WC. toilet) i thought he must be drinking to much but he wasn't. After a few weeks
and having a weight loss of 12 kilos he also started wetting the bed and i thought it was problems at school causing
the upset, then he was being sick, the next day was the first day of his spring break, i got him to the doctors and he was
sent straight to St Johns hospital in Chelmsford. They took blood and urine tests and almost directly we were told he
had Diabetes type 1. It was a schock to say the least. I didn't realise at that time how serious it can be. I really was not
aware of all the dangers of having diabetes, I know people live with it all over the world, and as long as everything is ok
and his levels are ok then things will be alright, its when you get sick, or when something is causing the levels to rise
without you knowing, with Hypos and Hypers both having the same sort of reaction.
The first Hypo was really scary, I couldn't remember if
he had to have a small tin of coke or run round the block. I was in a real panic, i then pulled myself together and got the
book out and dealt with it. The next few times i had the same reactions. Jeffrey is still getting Hypos and all the weight
he lost he has put on again, the Diabetic Nurse who visits us at home every three weeks has been a god send, she is always
there for us and i expect all the other children she has on her list, she said that he is still on a large ammount of units
of insuline. he has 32 units in the morning and 12 units at dinner time, and that this is why he has put back on the weight
he lost. On July the 16th Jeffrey has his first visit to the Diabetic Clinic which is held at St Johns.
